[Full Video] - Making The Legs And Base

A new record for video length folks at 18 minutes, and without doubt the most satisfying one to produce so far. It covers a fairly wide range of shop activity, so I do hope you enjoy it :)

Erratum from the previous video: In discussion with my burl supplier for the scientific name of the wood, it turns out that the clock base is in fact a slice of the much rarer Red Morrel, rather than Red Mallee. They are both from the Eucalypt genus, ...

[Full Video] - Spare Parts #14 - French Polishing A Piece Of Red Morrel Burl

That lovely chunk of wood has kept me busy this week, and here's a bit of detail on the finishing process. The full clock episode video will follow in a few days.

Cheers,

Chris.

Single point threading a set of timber screws for the clock base

These were an interesting little part to make - 8 are required to fasten the feet from the previous post to the timber plinth. The thread form is a 60 degree degree included angle, with a much larger than usual flat at the base of the thread. Tailstock support is from a simple cone runner turned up for the job.

Cheers,

Chris.

Using a standard wood router bit to profile brass.

Here's a quick clip of profiling the 4 feet that will sit beneath the clock plinth.

Its a standard 2 flute router bit (cove, 12mm radius, carbide tip) cutting 5mm sheet leaded brass with a modest feed rate/DOC and running at max rpm for my little mill (1800). It did a great job, and was a whole lot cheaper than a ball end mill of similar radius.

Interestingly a climb cut gave the better surface finish, which is not what I...

A beautiful piece of wood for the clock base

The next clock episode is all about the support structure for the clock.

I've been meaning to cover this part of the build well before now, but I've been held up searching for something special to use as the timber base. Early last week I found what I've been looking for - This incredible piece of Red Mallee burl, courtesy of Djarilmari timbers in Western Australia ( htt...

Making The Regulator And Suspension Post

Hi Folks,

In this video I make the suspension hardware that will support the pendulum. There's a bit of everything in this one; lathe, mill and hand finishing work, as well as some heat bluing of the fasteners.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris.

Spare Parts #13 - Making A Square Broach

It's not necessarily a common event, but when you need to make a square hole, it can be difficult to get a precise result.

One of the best methods to achieve a professional cut, is to use a custom made broach.

The Monthly Q & A videos

Hi Folks,

With the introduction of the Patron Series of projects that I mentioned recently, I have decided to make a few changes to Patreon, and one of them is to discontinue the Q & A video series.

The Q & A videos have worked well, but the questions have slowed to a trickle recently, and I think it is an idea that has probably run its course.

It usually takes me at least 2 days to record and edi...

Heat Bluing A Set of Steel Clock Hands

Hi Folks,

This spare parts video started out as just another sequence within the "Motion Work and Hands" clock episode that I'm currently working on. But the subject of heat bluing steel is worth exploring in more detail, so I've broken it out into its own video, and included more info on the process.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris.

One step closer...

Just finished up the bluing of these hands this evening, and very happy with the result. The gauge plate I used tends to blue a little darker than I would like, but it does polish better so its a trade off. Still a fair bit of footage to shoot for the video, but that's the difficult part done at least!

The hands in progress...

It might sound odd, but making these hands has been the most surprising part of this build so far. Such delicate little parts, yet so important to the visual impression of the clock. Barely a few hundredths of a mm between correct and dead wrong. Still need to bevel and blue, but wanted to show you what they look like tonight.

Working hard on the vids folks, thanks for being patient.

Project Preview

Hey folks,

Here is a quick little preview clip for the first "Patron Series" project that I've been working on over the last 4 weeks. This first project is based around the construction of a cool little hand vise, and will run over 5 episodes of approximately 10 minutes each. I'm about 75% done on the shooting/editing of the videos, and should be able to release the first episode a few weeks after the next clock episode.

Patreon Q & A February 2016

Not long after I purchased my little red lathe, I started to wonder whether I had just invested in a shiny red boat anchor. The tailstock design is incredibly poor, and its almost unusable for any sort of precise operation - I say almost, because there are a few things you can do to squeeze some surprisingly good quality work out of it.

Cheers,

Chris.
