Hey Everyone, here with the walkthrough for Ergot, off my latest EP on Get Physical. This track (along with the other two on the EP) was the result of a lot of fun jams on various pieces of gear in my studio. Most of the ear candy (percussion and musical one shots) came from selecting and manipulating the best parts of these jams. Though a lot of the project is in audio, there's still plenty to learn here, especially about arrangement when it ...

Hey Everyone,
A couple weeks ago I used my handheld recorder (Tascam D-40x) to record some noodling on a steel drum my friend gave to me. The thing is kind of a toy but I was recording all sorts of melodies, patterns, stray hits, etc. with a few different mallets and brushes. I brought the recording into Ableton later on and made nice pre-arrangement loop out of it--cutting it up and using it for melodies, bass, and even drums. I w...

Hey Everyone, here with the first recording from one of my Spring Tour sets. This one was a lot of fun, the energy from the crowd was contagious and I tested out plenty of unreleased stuff to great reactions. Enjoy!

Hey Everyone, I recorded a video walking through my current mastering chain and how I'm using each plugin. I mention this in the video, but this is not the kind of thing you can just copy exact settings and re-use...understanding the why and how is a lot more important because so much of what these plugins are doing is level-dependent.
An important caveat: I am not a mastering engineer. When faced with someone else's shitty premaster, I ...

Hey Everyone, back with the fourth video in this series. This technique is similar to Video #2, achieving a unique sound by shifting the playhead on the piano roll and recording the resulting audio.
P.S. excuse my extremely congested voice hahah...had a cold last week

Hey Everyone, back this month with one of my sets from India. Hard to pick which one to post but this one was a lot of fun because I got to start a bit chiller and groovy before really ramping it up. In a lot of the other cities I just went straight into bangers because that's where the party was at by the time I got on. A lot of range here and a ton of IDs :)
Enjoy!

Hey Everyone,
I revisited Track #1 (the breakbeat one) because after getting some feedback from friends, the clear consensus was that the track has everything it needs, and it's dope and I should finish it off, mix it down and send it off. Sometimes you need other people to tell you these kinda things 😆
So to polish this one off, I first mess around with the kick and breaks pattern to get something a little bit more intere...

Hey Producers,
I wanted to share some clips from the first Studio Feed track to help with your breakbeat tracks (and potentially any track where you're combining loops with MIDI). A big key to a successful breakbeat track in my opinion is using a loop to glue your midi parts together and give the overall sound more fullness and character. In this video, I get super super granular with the audio clip, splicing it up to match my MIDI parts...

Hey Producers, here is a short clip from the Blue Rose walkthrough where I touch on all the sound design and processing behind the main bass patch. This clip demonstrates a ton of concepts that I continually reinforce in a lot of the track feedback I provide you guys, so definitely worth a watch!

Hey Everyone, here is the walkthrough for Blue Rose, which came out in January on Factory 93 Records. This is a long one and jam packed with insights on sound design, automation, arrangement, layering, and more. I even do a quick demo of the crazy LFO lead patch on my Prophet Rev 2. Enjoy!

Hey Everyone, here's part 8 of Track #2. In this one I experiment with sampling some other records to help add a new dimension and depth to the track. Using some freeform string/percussion jazz records, I supplement (and then replace) some of the VST strings in the climax with chopped and warped sampled parts, and then also fill in other sections of the arrangement with other parts so that the sounds feel like part of the track rather than som...

Hey Everyone, here is part 7 for Track #2. The whole session is basically just enhancing the final crescendo in the song. I honestly overdo it a bit (and tone it down in a later session) but it's likely very useful to see all the various ways I went about intensifying the song, such as automation, adding elements, going to higher octaves, distortion, drum fills, overall busyness, etc.

Hey Everyone, here is the recording from February's Protege Feedback Livestream. Whether you had a track in or not, there's some useful tangents I go on about low end.
Check 22:30-28 for some tips on groovy low-end + a quick bass patch from scratch that is similar to a simple sine wave but way more interesting. I then clarify some stuff and offer more tips at 1:12:00 onwards, including a fun way to determine the bass issues in your...

Hey Everyone,
Back with part 6 on Track #2. This one is kinda all over the place, just me listening and making small adjustments on the mix, arrangement, transitions, etc. in a natural (i.e. random) fashion. Not the most 'productive' or 'efficient' session so to speak, but sometimes this kinda in-the-weeds stuff is necessary! Some notable events include:
-I bounce the Cycles granular piano bit to audio and comp the best sections to...

Hey Everyone,
Starting a new mini-series here called Thinking Outside The Box (In The Box). My aim is to show you creative ways that you can use (and misuse) software (usually stock Ableton stuff) to inspire you to think outside of the box, and to just give you some cool new techniques to try out in your own work.
In this first video I cover a digital "needle drop" style sampling technique as well as experimenting with pushing Able...

Hey Everyone, back with part 5 on Track #2. This one is a cool one!
I start the session by bouncing the piano part to audio and then throwing it into one of my favorite Kontakt plugins, Slate & Ash CYCLES. It's essentially a granular/loop based synth/sampler with near-unlimited possibilities. My goal was to keep the progression intact but making it more rhythmic, so that it could carry the track along in a more interesting way than j...

Hey Everyone, back with Pt 4 of Track #2.
I start this one out by recording subtle pads from my Minilogue to cut up and have on hand for filling out the arrangement. I then mess around with EchoBoy while recording to get some interesting tape delay sounds to audio.
Around 17:00 I start fine tuning the breakdown into the drop. At 21:00 I add another bell sound with a repetitive counter melody. Around 32:00, I start placing the Minil...

Happy Friday all,
I've been slacking on the recipe front, sorry about that. This one is a serious staple in my kitchen, I've always got all of the ingredients on hand and keep a meat log in the freezer for emergencies (😆 read on, it'll make sense soon). It's inspired by the Doner in Berlin that I essentially survive off of when I visit. They have 24-hour little shops all over the city and it's usually surprisingly fresh and good...

Hey Everyone, onto the third hour for Project #2.
I start this one off by layering a pan drum sound over the piano chords. I think this is when the song really started to take shape. I then continue messing around with strings to see how I can further build up the chord progression so that it might be able to grow and develop over the eventual arrangement.
At around 20 minutes I start dragging stuff out to begin arranging, as...

Hey Everyone, back with the second hour of Project #2.
For the first 10 minutes, I mess around with an acapella trying to make a hook for the song. I definitely think I got a great texture and there's plenty of potential here, but I may end up spending a bunch of time later on fine tuning and really extracting a true hook out all of the little bits--right now it's nice but not quite catchy enough and likely too obviously reversed.

Hey Everyone,
I recorded a new session starting from scratch. This time the idea ended up way more chill and melodic, kinda similar vibe as Love Syndrome.
I start by using Kontakt Studio Drummer to build an initial beat. Then mess around with some random melodic ideas.
At 17:30 I pull up a piano patch and start messing around trying to come up with a nice chord progression. With a bit of trial and error I ge...
