Antikythera Fragment #4 - Ancient Tool Technology - The First Hardened Steel

Hey Folks,

One of the key tool technologies that needs to be explored around the Antikythera Mechanism is the simple hand held file. So this is the first of 2 Fragment videos relating to the making and hardening of a set of custom files, using materials and processes consistent with the period.

This particular video is all about the hardening process, and the other one is all about making the files from scratch. They kind of need to be se...

Its a good thing there's so much division required to build this mechanism, because I absolutely LOVE using this dividing plate (SHORT VIDEO). So fast, and easy to use. Not just the wheels to divide, but also the calendar ring markings, calendar location holes, as well as angular placement of some of the other f...

Antikythera Fragment #2 - Ancient Tool Technology - The Original Dividing Plate?

One thing about this machine that is truly surprising, is just how small the teeth are.

There's a well established theory as to how the tooth divisions were marked out, but employing that method to mark out multiple wheels has forced me to question whether it can reasonably be applied to the Antikythera Mechanism.

So in this video I propose an alternative process of wheel division, using only the non precision tools of the period.

Tools, Glorious Tools! #2 - The CNC Lathe Indexer

Hey Folks,

Please enjoy TGT#2, all about that fancy digital indexer!

Just as a bit of an aside, it occurs to me that with these TGT videos I'm going to be talking about specific tool product names in a way that I've not done before.

So it's probably also worth mentioning, that if you hear me say something nice about a given product, its because I'm a customer, and I genuinely like it. I have no commercial a...

Antikythera Fragment #1 - Ancient Tool Technology - Making A Small Parts Vise

Hey Folks,

This video is the first episode in a companion series to the main Antikythera Mechanism project, that I'm calling "Antikythera Fragments". Sort of like the ongoing Spare Parts series, but specifically for the AM.

The reason for the separate series is that there's a lot that I'd like to discuss about this machine, that requires a large amount of speculation and guesswork. I'd like the main series to be a...

Quick Update

Hey folks,

A quick update for you, so that you know where I'm at with the next Patron Series and YouTube projects.

I've spent the last 2 weeks continuing with the prototype work for each project, and all is going well so far. As it happens there are a quite a few square holes to be formed for these projects, so I needed to make 2 new square broaches for the job, and I've included a couple of interesting improvements to the broach design....

Quick update

Hey Folks,

A quick update for you on my progress with the next video drop.

I had planned to cover the escapement construction in a single episode, but there is so much good stuff to show in this part of the build, the video has grown to over 25 minutes, with still a bit more shooting to to be completed.

I'm reluctant to cut too much of it out, so I'm splitting it into 2 separate videos of approx 15 minutes each....
