Watching Silence
Added 2020-10-14 21:52:38 +0000 UTCI used to avoid great crowds and shows, gatherings of any sort larger than a few dozen. The endless seas of others, the cacophonous ringing of voices and noises a hindrance to thought, rather than excitement. It was much nicer to witness the events from a high place, to the side of it, to see those involved be joyous and feel like a singularity rather than an individual, rather than to participate myself. Would it still be true for me, if there were never a gathering again to witness?
When I was making this, I wondered about these things, and what it would be like for this creature and how odd he looks, did he have friends who looked like him or was he one of a kind? Who are you, the viewer, a friend? A stranger? How long ago was this amphitheater populated, just last week or last century?
There's a lot of questions being asked all over the world right now of sorts, and I wanted a way to capture that complexity and uncertainty. I found I just have no words, no way to describe it, and I'm not sure I even should - so instead, I will doodle this lonely golden cloisonné creature. Patterned like a beautiful piece meant for a display case, but sitting out in a seemingly empty world. Posed in a place meant to share an event to thousands, but the feeling would be just the same within a glass case, were it so empty as it is this day.
On an unrelated note, my partner and I are remodeling our kitchen in the time that he is between jobs (hopefully) since there is both time and I have a bit of savings to devote to the project - so we have been largely busy working on it! I do apologize for my long stretches of silence, it is not forever - just for a month or so, and I will have a few fun pieces to share after (some nsfw, some larger painty things big enough for prints should you all wish for that!) :D
