248 - Turn On

Jen and Tim unearth a cursed relic: the television show cancelled before the final credits even rolled, Turn On!

Thank you, SoapsNThings on YouTube, for archiving so many episodes of Peyton Place.

The offensive Aussie show Jen alluded to that also got cancelled during the first episode was "Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos." You can see the singular episode at the Internet Archive!

Finally, Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn" is kind of a bop.

That is fascinating— I wasn't aware of the in-depth history, obviously (or I might have mentioned it on the episode). Also most TV execs are pieces of shit, so I'm not surprised an Aussie one is a turbo POS (nothing against most Austraiians, but they don't exactly fuck around when it comes to being wild as hell)

The circumstances around Naughtiest Home Videos were suspicious to say the least. Kerry Packer, owner of Channel 9 (who aired the show at the time), was trying to expand his media empire in Australia at the time. However, he kept butting up against Australia's then anti-monopoly laws, and was also judged by some committee or some shit to 'not be a fit and proper person' which can affect your media ownership. Then this show comes out of nowhere, hosted by a guy who's famous for being a foulmouth, no-one seems to have vetted the footage before it went to air so we have footage of a couple screwing in a park which was probably illegal to show on air in Australia. But Kerry Packer happened to be watching it (not implausible in itself, he was a fat drunkard and probably watched TV when he wasn't sending bodyguards to bodily harm journalists or running his brothels) and called the station to get it off the air. Wow! What a stand-up guy!
