2025-10-02 20:16:30 +0000 UTCKarella, you were correct to refer to the Mabuse series as 'expressionist'. I can confirm this as someone who did a major in film studies. Sorry, cultural studies. If you want to be a film major - sorry, did it again, cultural studies major - like me, there are actually three words you need to use whenever you mention Mabuse or really anything by Lang from around that period. "Expressionist", "chiaroscuro" (whether or not you ever mention the lighting. In fact, bonus points if you're somehow referring to the script or even just the on-set catering), and finally "proto-Noir". If anyone asks you to define any of those terms, you should immediately summon your inner Jordan Peterson and obfuscate as much as humanly possible. Enjoy your new arts degree.
