Chapter 44. The Rocket Punch

“So, you have chosen military service.”

I blocked Irje’s strike with my shield and glanced at the approaching lamia. “Did you expect me to do something else?”

She shrugged her shoulders; her face hidden by her customary veil. “A woman can hope.”

“Bah!” Irje scoffed and tried to hit me with her wooden sword once again. “After what you did?”

While Irje was ...

Chapter 43. When Poetry Kills

“You do realise that this will raise quite a few eyebrows, right?” Yeva asked me as she prodded the recently hatched larva.

“Yes, but I don’t have a lot of options when it comes to battlefield medicine. Sharing nanites is out of the question, especially for something so trite as a stab or an infection. The immediate results will sway many, however, as people are prone to seek cures from the most unorthodox sources as l...

Chapter 42. The Die is Cast

“These runes are mocking me, I swear…” I huffed as I peered down at the multiple designs in front of me.

“Hmm?” Isra cast a glance in my direction and turned back to her furnace. “These look like properly drawn resistance runes. They are simple but they get the job done. What seems to be the problem?”

“In what they do! They are simple and impossible at the same time. A few scribbles and some we...

Here is the fist concept art. While I am trying to speed up chapter releases these aren't coming as fast as I've hoped but I wanted to get at least something for the 100+ subscribers mark.

Thank you very much.

Chapter 41. Rumble

“That cunning mutt!” Anaise exclaimed indignantly. “The next time I will see Lita’af I will rip her ears off!”

“Your friend, right?” I scratched my head in recollection. “What did she do?”

“She had set this whole thing in motion, that’s what she did! Lita’af Hikmat was the one that saw my new spell used against her runed table. And she was quite direct in her desires back then. I am sur...

Chapter 40. Is Enough to Start a Rockslide

The entire Divine intervention came and went while I was still trying to process the situation. I wasn’t even sure if I should feel happy that the looming issue had resolved itself so quickly, or indignant since I was, once again, treated like a curious commodity rather than someone with free will.

In the end, I decided to accept it as something to be expected. I did extensively rely on the wermage selective blindness about ...

Chapter 39. A Tiny Pebble

“So this is the source?”

“Yes and no. Look closer, mother: while he casts ripples all around him, they aren’t his.”

“Then where is it coming from?”

“I do not know. Whatever it might be — it is faint and elusive like the gaze of a stalking predator, hidden in the undergrowth. Patient and calculating.”

“Nevertheless, he brings calamity into the River of Fat...

Less than 24 hours.

Heads up again, unfortunately. I had managed to catch up some, but I am dead tired on my feet and it affects my ability to put words well together. Most of the chapter is done, it just needs the scenes to wrap up. I will take a sleep break and finish the rest before Thursday ends.

Chapter 38. Poof

Aikerim Kiymetl Adal

“Enough!” Aikerim strode across the room, her kaftan flourishing as she walked — showing off the exuberant materials and exquisite masterwork. “Anaise, hold your retinue — I know this is your first day and you are eager to show your real strength, but this is our family.”

She turned around and gave a nod to her older sister and a bow to her mother. “I will ma...

Chapter 37. The Soured Feast

Amanzhan Kiymetl Irada

The first feeling that something was going terribly wrong hit her just as she entered the dining hall.

“Was I wrong about our agreement, mother?” It took all of her willpower to keep her voice calm in front of Matriarch. There were others around. “Did Aikerim empty Kiymetl coffers just to have a single Feast? So much gold wasted for a Lady that is not even trying t...

Heads up with some pictures.

I am still catching up from last week and the current chapter once again has too many characters and too much talking and politicking and such. There is no writer's block but things take a lot of time to polish when there are multiple layers of knowledge among characters and half don't know what the other half does.

I hope to have the new chapter by the end of this Thursday so it is still within the scheduled day that I tried to keep. View Post

Chapter 36. Sneaky Little Secrets

Shahin Esca Yusuf-ja

“You know where.” She placed a satchel into the tiny hands.

The urchin nodded and stormed off, tightly clutching the parcel. The streets of Samat had plenty of desperate children. Constant hunger made them willing to work without asking too many questions or getting too curious for their own good.

Shahin preferred to employ children. Their p...

Chapter 35. Dirty Little Secrets

Isra Enoch Haleh

She took a glance outside of her workshop and, seeing as no one was paying attention to her, closed the gates. While the place was originally built with a wide open entrance, the recent scrutiny from her own House forced some additions. The front was still open so she could have fresh and cold air, but Wrena had built a solid wall all around it.

Chapter 34. Less Than Excessive Flexing

Anaise Kiymetl Hilal

She stared at the cougar in front of her and the gloves and gauntlets that were floating nearby. This wasn’t a simple manipulation — Anaise could see that Irje was subtly moving multiple parts of the whole rather than controlling it as one thing.

“What do you think?” Irje asked, grinning.

“Very impressive. Did Erf manage to teach you that?”

Chapter 33. Parenting Hard

“Tell me, young daimon. If you are to sire a child with a wermage…will the child be a murk? Wermage? Or maybe something else entirely?”

Her eyes stared into mine as she brought the Orb higher. High enough to see the result without looking away.

“Something greater, perhaps?”

“No child of mine will be born…” the Orb flashed in denial, “…for the foreseeable future.”

Chapter 32. The Problems of Storks and Cabbages

“Was it really that bad?” I asked Yeva as soon as my mother stormed out of the greenhouse.

She ruffled my hair. “The melon itself is not the issue. It is just a plant with an unexpected taste and texture. The problem is how it makes you look. To me, this is exactly like the Erf I know and love. Unfortunately, the new Erf is one she still has trouble adjusting to, and the ‘meat melon’ of yours acted like a reminder....

Chapter 31. Wash Before Eating

The goblet smashed into the floor, spilling wine everywhere.

“What do you mean ‘No’” Anaise growled.

I shook my head silently: the sudden complications were unfortunately expected. Otherwise, Aikerim wouldn’t have been so busy in the last couple of days.

“My mother…” Aikerim paused to find a better word, “is being cautious. Amanzhan did manage to gather a significant po...

Chapter 30. Hands-on Experience

Yeva

“I know you were expecting Erf to stay around, but he is busy at the moment,” Yeva murmured as she pulled the rope tighter. “Moreover, I asked him to. Someone has been rather greedy lately: sharing her nights with the rest of our sadaq and worming her way into his bed almost every night. I think you need a lesson in humility.”

“Is that what this is?” Irje wiggled ar...

Chapter 29. Hard and Soft

“Anaise.” Ramad almost whistled, while twirling his moustache. The sword and shield turned back into the door and stick and were left lying on the floor. “You’ve grown. Quite fast, as well: I didn’t expect you to show such levels of power for at least another century. Be careful — such power costs a lot. It might be time for you to learn precision and restrain—“

Another rumble interrupted his speech. Irje punch...

Chapter 28. Revelations

“Erf!” Anaise yelled at me, scandalised, “Stop spying on the Gods!”

“I am not spying.” I shifted the tubes a bit, trying to get a better view. “I am testing the new equipment.”

Like hell, I would not look. It was a freaking magical castle! Flying in the freaking skies! On its own magical island to boot.

When I heard about a ‘Divine castle in the sky’, my first thought...

Chapter 27. When the Sky Blinked

AN: I was planning on posting this in advance but then extra work happened, so now it is simply on time. Please inform me of any discrepancies so I can take a look once I wake up from my double shift :V

I was slowly starting to get used to the scratching of a quill and the constant splatters of ink I was leaving everywhere as I wrote. But I had no time to improve my writing utensils at the moment.

Chapter 26. Complications Under the Silent Sky

Amir Esca Shirvan-ja

“Are you sure this is not a trap?” Amir glanced at her cousin.

Samat was cold, wet, and crowded. A far cry from the pleasantly dry sands of their cities. Even the decks of their ships were cleaner than some streets of this cesspit. And they had to travel by tail.

The other lamura shook her head. “Shahin would not have suggested this place if sh...

Chapter 25. Impressions

Shahin Esca Yusuf-ja

She slid across the estate with purpose and familiarity. A surprising familiarity considering how quickly the usual Emanai estate turned into something else entirely.

This place, once idyllic, was swallowed by noises of machinery and busy servants. And his hand was visible everywhere. Shahin could understand with a glance what each contraption did, but there was always som...

Chapter 24. Dialogues

Anaise Kiymetl Hilal

She watched quietly as Irje tried to overpower her werbow, her head deep in a haze of contemplation. But some mistakes were easy to spot, especially since she had made plenty of these herself. And some mistakes she had no intention to experience at all.

“You are pushing Flow into the bow, you don’t need to do that.”

“Huh?” Irje turned around, wip...
