BRAIDS - Exclusive Process Video - May 2021

I completed a small painting as a study and experiment the other day, so here's your Process Timelapse for May!
I have a number of various original concepts in the works and I would like to experiment with my painting technique, but in order not to risk ruining any of my prepared pieces by jumping into them too soon, I spent some time on smaller studies and looser painted sketches first.
I wanted to try out the grisaille technique, where you put down your values in hues of grey first, and then add colour on top of that, which is what I am attempting in the above video.
I used acrylic for the grey layer, and added very loose and light watercolour washes for my colour towards the end.
The result for this piece is intentionally rough, but I do feel like I need a little more practice to get it right so you might see a few more of these types of "studies" in the coming weeks.
I like a muted palette, and this is one way to achieve such a look, so I want to try it out a few more times to see if it fits my goals, and to decide whether I want to attempt this on a bigger piece next.
This particular small piece started out as a study of the hairstyle, as I want to get better at painting hair, and then devolved into the piece you see here as I had fun while painting.
This will probably be the 5x7 print for May!

Wait, I jus looked it up and I did know that technique, just forgot the name and thought it was only good for Acrylics, Gouache and oils, but no, itโs works on watercolor as well, just with transparency and not white, very interesting.

I never knew the name of that technique, Iโve used it instinctively, but a painting teacher once looked surprised at what I was doing, like I was nuts to do something like that, the result was a quite hateful piece ๐ and she looked at me like: I was sure that was the wrong way to use watercolor. I never came back to her class๐. Thank you for sharing with us.
