Color studies using references!

I've wanted to do little painting studies for a loooong time and finally last night I took courage to do it. I don't know why it is so hard to step out our comfort zone and overcome the fear of failing, it's such a stupid feeling but it's so overwhelming.

Anyways, I knew I wanted to practice some maritime imagery and starting with something I enjoy would probably make the process more friendly. I used some beautiful photos I had saved on my pinterest as references, (I freaking love statues and statues underwater? *chef's kiss*))

The main exercise for these was NOT picking up colors with the color picker, and instead trying to chose every single color through observation, this is huge training for the eye!

This is the first one I did, I don't think colors look the same but it conveys a similar feeling I guess, and sometimes that's enough !

I was really trying to capture her face for this one and I struggled a lot, then I remembered that there's no point on doing an exact copy of the original because I should be focusing on colors and shapes and composition, nothing more. Obsessive details are not important !

here's a little break down on the process for this one, just to give you an idea! It's actually super messy but very straightforward tbh, it's basically a lot of painting and adding layers and layers of color until you get the shapes you want. The lasso is a great tool as well!

In the last picture, I always use hard light or overlay layers to add light and warmth to the atmosphere. Also, I used the foliage brush set by Devin I love those so much!
