Sketchbook spread + dealing with bad drawing days β›…πŸ„

Hi guys! ❀️

It feels so good to be back with art that I actually like D: I've been drawing a lot lately but I wasn't really feeling any of the stuff I was creating. I don't know what's going on with me lol I've never feel this disconnected from my art in years and it's a bit scary.

Anyways, yesterday I took the day to work *PATIENTLY* on something new, and I say patiently because I have this horrible bad habit of being always in a rush, always figuring stuff on the go, never planning anything beforehand. And that's cool if you feel good with your art, but in the phase I was in, it was just making everything worse. I kept messing up everything I did, which led to frustration grow more and more.

What helped me was:

1- Using references. Make it easy for your brain.

2- Keep it simple

3- Use the tools that makes you feel happy and excited to create.

4- Change your canvas. For me, it helped A LOT to use a bigger sketchbook. I think I'm really tired of the small A5 format of the usual moleskine sketchbooks I've been using for years now. I think I've reached a point where my art is asking for something else and it's crucial to listen to those things. Just because you've been using something for years doesn't mean it's doing you any good now, I think I've been limiting myself a lot with small sketchbooks, considering that I don't use them just for sketching, but for a lot of final, rendered pieces.

These were all the sketches using Pinterest refs. Guys, I noticed I don't draw LEGS in my sketchbooks (not only because I love mermaids) but because I usually ran out of space when working on small sketchbooks ??? I've been limiting myself and drawing the same stuff in part because it's what I know fits in my canvas. That's not acceptable.

For inking I used Copic multiliners and the Pentel pocket brush. For painting, I used a mix of alcohol markers and posca markers, which nowadays are the tools that make me more excited to draw.

I know it's simple and it's not a masterpiece or anything, but it was like a healing process for me, I guess that's why I feel good with it. I even took the time to use masking tape for the color blocks haha.

I really want to do another spread like this one and record it this time, I think the process could be fun to watch!

Thank you so so much for being here ❀️

Love,

Gret
