Sylvie's Technique Vlog - The Importance of Head Alignment (13 min)

I've previously made vlogs about knowing where your feet are, how you land, where you step, etc. This is a primary part of alignment and shouldn't be overlooked, and is more important than the head. Several years ago Chatchai Sasakul started me on this path with not breaking the frame. But because the body is a whole piece,  no matter how good your footwork is or your strikes are, you'll find that if your head is out of alignment you will suffer deficit in power and balance. So, knowing where you head ought to be and then learning to feel when it's in the right alignment will do wonders for balance, speed, and power. It also look so much better, because it affects all those things.

I see this most in boxers, but since learning to look for the alignment of the head, I see it now in Muay Thai fighters all the time. I see both the lack of alignment and the perfection of alignment in the fastest, slickest, most powerful fighters. I don't know how many of them actually make any kind of association with where their head and feet are, but they intuitively or through years of working it out have found an alignment that works really nicely.

Something to look out for is not over-thinking it. You want to feel it. Don't let your chin float up and don't stare at the floor trying to will your head to be over your hips or knees, just check as often as you can and note what it feels like when it's right. You'll start to be able to separate when you're out of alignment before you note when you're "in," so there's a lot of "not that, not that, not that" before it's ever actually, "oh yes, that's right." Keep with it.
