Basically you listed exactly what we do now. Toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, newspapers, old egg cartons, paper packaging, cardboard boxes, we save all year in a big trash can or box and use in the wood stove as fire starter all winter. I always look at rinsing out jars with a little hot water and adding back into the dish as just the start of the cleaning out to repurpose or recycle the jar process. We save all the veggie scraps and feed to the chickens as well (or compost). All of this reduces waste and decreases the garbage we throw away. We also keep a burn barrel outside and burn other things destined for the trash can.
