Anime Herald: What was your initial idea for Persistent Petitioners?
FeiFei Ruan: When Wizards of the Coast reached out to me, they were shopping the Secret Lair job for Persistent Petitioners. They wanted something completely different from their normal style. Something different from their fantasy Magic the Gathering style. That’s why they reached out to me. My style is completely different from their style. They said I could do whatever I liked, whatever I wanted.
At that time, I was living in New York. Because of the New York culture, I thought of the pigeons. I submitted some sketches, and they loved it. They loved the New York pigeons. It was completely different from what they had done in the past. They approved it right away.
Anime Herald: I love the idea of Persistent Petigeoners.
FeiFei Ruan: Yes! New York Pigeons are so aggressive. Walking around, stealing food. Everyone who lives in New York has experience with the pigeons. They are so aggressive, so loud. They’re everywhere. They’ll fly into you. You have to walk around them. I made this card based on their energy and attitude.
Anime Herald: Just looking at this card, I can hear the New York pigeons singing. They make noise.
FeiFei Ruan: I thought it was fun to have them on something special, so I had them standing on a New York Cab.
Anime Herald: How did you get involved with Lightbox Expo?
FeiFei Ruan: It’s my first time here. I had always wanted to visit. But I always had an excuse not to go. Two years ago, I tested positive for COVID. Last year, I was out of the country. This year, I wanted to have a strong reason to come so I wouldn’t skip Lightbox, so I became an exhibitor.
