They're basically toying with us xD

I think I was disappointed slightly that there wasn't anything more "magical" in the basement, however in retrospect I much prefer the grounded approach that they took. AOT is like that though, giving you what you didn't know you wanted from the series :D

Grisha wrote it from his memories, so he eventually remembers stuff, it was just initially that he only remembered his name and doctor status. They showed that a bit with Armin too, where he forgot everything after Bert transformed.
